In some ways it was hard to get the number down to 10.

I was having to pick a best moment in New Zealand sport last year, and there were plenty of moments of real excitment which had the blood flowing.

The All Blacks' hammering of France at the World Cup, the upset win by the Silver Ferns over the Australians at the early stages of the World Cup, Martin Guptill's massive double century in the World Cup quarterfinal against the West Indies and our rowers reigning supreme at the World Championships in France were highlights of what was a successful year for New Zealand sport.

But none of these moments have even made the top 10 sporting highlights released yesterday for the Halberg awards.

The moments, decided by members of the media, vary across a range of sports and have some southern input.

The Highlanders winning their firsttitle with a final victory over the Hurricanes in Wellington in early July makes the list.

Whether that whole victory - all 80 minutes of it - is a moment or a match is up to debate.

But what a victory it was in a great ride to the title.

The early favourite looms as the six hit by Black Caps batsman Grant Elliott to win the World Cup semifinal over South Africa at Eden Park.

This was a game which thrilled the nation and had a great climax when Elliott smacked the penultimate ball of the innings over the fence.

Golfer Lydia Ko being the youngest female major winner is a top achievement, while Amber Hearn's goal for the Football Ferns in a 1-0 win over Brazil also makes the list.

The All Blacks get a couple of moments.

Now-retired captain Richie McCaw became the most-capped international player when he took on the Australians at Eden Park.

There is also the selection of replacement back Beauden Barrett picking up the ball and running to score the try to clinch victory in the World Cup final.

The moments category is the only one up for public vote - so the real sports lover gets a chance.

"The award gives the passionate sporting public an opportunity to honour the athlete or team who captured their heart in 2015,'' Halberg Disability Sport Foundation chief executive Shelley McMeeken said.

The winner will be announced at the Halberg Awards in Auckland on February 18.

People can vote once a day by text message or online at www.sportingmoment.co.nz.
