Fairweather heads fine finish at short-course champs

Otago swimmers have had a successful finish to the national short-course swimming championships in Auckland.

Neptune’s Erika Fairweather added two more gold medals to her already impressive haul, including another to be ratified as a national record.

The 13-year-old broke her age group’s record in the 800m freestyle, swimming a time of 8min 58.05sec to beat the old  mark  of 9min 03.57sec.

It was her fourth national record of the championships and fifth overall.

That  enabled her to claim gold by nearly 30sec. She also edged Australian Ella Ramsay to win gold in the 100m freestyle in 58.11sec, which should be ratified as an  Otago record.

Cecilia Crooks also had success in the 800m freestyle, claiming bronze in the women’s 16-years grade in a time of 9min 08.11sec.

She added a silver in the 200m butterfly, swimming 2min 2.33sec.

Molly Law also proved successful over the longer distance, finishing third in the women’s 15 years 800m freestyle in 9min 09.81sec.

Zenith’s Stefannie Gillespie had to settle for silver in the 19 and over 800m freestyle, swimming 8min 57.76 to be edged by 0.25sec.

Neptune’s Jessica Scott finished second in the women’s 15 years 200m butterfly  in  2min 22.54sec, while Courtland Ellis took bronze in the men’s 17-18 years 100m freestyle in 50.60sec.
