Balmacewen and Eastern Harbour claimed easy wins in Dunedin club tennis on Saturday when they won 5-1 and 6-0, over McGlashan and Taieri, respectively.

Despite both teams losing in the first round they lead the points table on countback, as  unbeaten teams St Clair and Tertiary had byes in the second round.

In the feature match at Balmacewen,  the home team’s Paddy Ou beat Carlos Reid 6-4, 6-4 almost matching the 7-5, 6-4 result when the two met in the consolation event at the Otago Indoor Open the previous weekend.

Henry Neas and Matt McCutcheon were convincing straight-sets winners for the home team but schoolboy Lachie Kenneally showed more consistency, beating Nick Cutfield 6-2, 6-0 and taking a consolation point for McGlashan.

Balmacewen added two set doubles wins for the convincing margin.

Playing at Taieri, Harbour dropped only one set against an understrength home side.

No1 Ryan Eggers was all efficiency in beating veteran Darryl Paterson 6-0, 6-1 while Kobus Faber battled back to beat Graeme Clarke 6-0, 6-2 in the second and third sets, after going behind 3-6.

Loen Jiang and William Muller lost only three games apiece in the lower-order singles and, while Eggers and Muller were pushed by Paterson and Clarke, they got home 6-2, 7-6 in the top doubles.

Faber and Gavin Mockford proved their role as doubles specialists, not dropping a game.
