Promising Queenstown brothers Riki (18) and Ben (17) McLachlan left this week for Europe to compete in six open junior tournaments over winter.

Queenstown Tennis Club coach and former South African pro, Lan Bale, said it was a major coup for the boys to get a shot at the international junior tournaments.

Between now and July, they will compete in Milan, Belgium, France, Germany and England before topping the trip off with a tilt at the Wimbledon junior tournament title.

Riki will be travelling to America to take up his tennis scholarship with Berkeley University in August.

Riki is ranked 50 in junior tennis and Ben is in the top 80, Bale said.

The brothers are former Wakatipu High School students but have been studying by

correspondence because of the amount of travel involved in their tennis careers.

In February, Riki beat Ben in the final of the International Tennis Federation 18s Summer Tennis Championship in Auckland in straight sets to claim his first international singles title.

Riki managed to make the second round of the singles at the Australian Open juniors, while Ben had a narrow loss in the first round.

The brothers McLachlan combined to win the doubles title in Auckland, making it the third career doubles win for Riki and the second for Ben.
