Anzac sales draw crowds

People made the most of their day off yesterday, hitting the shops for the Anzac Day sales.

The last Tamahine Knitwear sale opened to several hundred people who were lined up outside, and Briscoes reported about 30 people waiting at its door when the store opened.

Tamahine chief executive Ross Gamble said yesterday afternoon several thousand people attended the sale, which had been going for 26 years.

Many customers commented how sorry they were that the factory was closing, he said.

‘‘It was a huge turnout. The response was overwhelming.''

Briscoes manager Mike Compton said it had been ‘‘flat out crazy'' for much of the day,

Most other retailers spoken to by the Otago Daily Times reported busy days, similar to those usually experienced at the weekend.

Those spoken to in the hospitality sector said it had been quiet compared to a normal Friday, but trade was steady overall.
