Two crashes on same stretch of Gibbston Highway

One person is in a moderate condition and a road is blocked after two cars rolled within the span of half an hour on the same stretch of an Otago highway.

Emergency services were called to the first crash at 6.50pm on Gibbston Highway (State Highway 6) near the intersection with Victoria Flats Rd, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said.

On arrival, crews from Arrowtown and Cromwell located a car lying on its side with all occupants out of the vehicle.

They provided first aid and scene safety before heading off.

However, about half an hour later, the same two stations were again dispatched to another crash on the highway — less than 5km from the first.

When they arrived at the scene of the crash, near the intersection with Waitiri Rd, they located a car flipped on its roof.

Nobody was trapped and the crews are still on site to provide traffic control.

A police spokeswoman said the second crash is currently blocking the road to traffic in both lanes and one person from the second crash is in a moderate condition.
