New Zealand's supply chain with China will be at the forefront of the inaugural Food Integrity Conference in Auckland in July.

The conference has been initiated by the Asia Pacific Centre for Food Integrity, of which Otago woman Dr Helen Darling is executive director.

It aims to provide a forum for discussion on issues facing food producers both in New Zealand and in China.

Registrations are open for the conference, which will be held on July 13-14, and Dr Darling expects 120-150 people to attend.

It was a key time, as regulations and requirements were changing worldwide and affecting the entire food chain of suppliers and producers, she said.

Dr Darling, one of the founders of Oritain, which pioneered global food verification systems, saw ``great potential'' for New Zealand globally as a leader in food safety and security.

It was exciting to see the enthusiasm of international and New Zealand food industry experts lining up to be involved, which she believed indicated the need for such a forum.

Most of the Asia Pacific Centre for Food Integrity's work was offshore and it was setting up an office in China.

International keynote speakers include Col John Hoffman, who is with the Food Protection and Defence Institute, based at Minnesota University, and Sonia Bradley, from the World Bank Global Food Safety Programme.

Speakers from China include Prof Yongnjing Wu, chief scientist at the China National Centre of Food Risk Assessment in Beijing and Kevin Wang, editor-in-chief at China Food Safety Magazine.

AbacusBio managing director Dr Anna Campbell, of Dunedin, will also address the conference.
