District final disappointment

Organisers of the Timaru district final of the ANZ Young Farmer Contest are disappointed it had to be called off because of a lack of entries.

Milford-Clandeboye Young Farmers vice-president James McLeod, one of those arranging the event, said it was ''really disappointing''.

District finals were a good opportunity for younger members of the organisation to try their hand at competition and gain experience, he said.

The two who did turn up on the day, Milford-Clandeboye club members Stafford Adams and Cole Harris, had been selected to represent the district at the Aorangi regional final, Mr McLeod said. He was unsure as to why so few entered but it was an extremely busy time of the year on most farms, especially on dairy farms.

It would be the topic for discussion at the next regional meeting, he said.

Previously the district final was held in February but was shifted to November last year.

Two clubs - Milford-Clandeboye and Mackenzie - make up the district.

Between them they have a membership of about 30.

Mr Adams and Mr Cole would be joining in other district events to gain experience ahead of the regional finals, next year, Mr McLeod said.
