The New Zealand Fencing Competitions (NZFC) South Island doubles fencing competition was held at the recent Southern Field Days at Waimumu, near Gore, attracting eight teams.
Mr Stanger, from Stanger Fencing in North Otago, was partnered with Mr Love, a part-time fencer from Troy Love Contracting in Gore.
The winning team, from Ben Haugh Fencing in Geraldine, won a trip to compete in the Golden Pliers competition at the National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek.
The competition included erecting a 41m fence line, hanging a gate and completing an irrigator crossing.
It was the second competition Mr Stanger (41) had taken part in. He has owned his business for 19 months, having previously worked on farms.
He thought entering was a good way to help raise his business' profile. Overall, he was pleased with the pair's performance, saying there were a ‘‘few things'' that went ‘‘a wee bit wrong''.
‘‘You do learn quite a lot. It makes you think about the quality of your job a lot more,'' Mr Stanger said.
The pair were only four points behind the winning team and he thought he would ‘‘probably'' having a crack again next year at the South Island Agricultural Field Days at Kirwee.
Fencing competitions were quite strong in the North Island and there was a drive to get more interest in the South Island, he said.
