The Kelly family, from North Otago, had a ''superb'' show at this year's South Island Holstein Friesian championships in Balclutha.

The championships were held in conjunction with the recent South Otago A&P Show. Rob and Katrina Kelly, with their children Jason and Jessica, own the Kailey Holstein Friesian stud.

They won the South Island champion cow class, along with supreme all-breeds cow and supreme animal awards, at the South Otago A&P show with 7-year-old Kailey Goldwyn Pom Pom ET.

A delighted Mrs Kelly described Pom Pom as a correct cow who ''really showed herself off at the show''.

''She just went out there and said `look at me','' Mrs Kelly said.

Pom Pom had already bred four heifers and was breeding well. She also recently received an ''excellent'' classification from Holstein Friesian New Zealand.

The Kailey stud also won the heifer calf and 2-year-old in-milk heifer classes, while Jason won reserve best pet calf and was second in the intermediate all-breeds dairy herdsperson.

''We just had an awesome day,'' Mrs Kelly said.

There was a top line-up of cattle being exhibited and it was good to see the prizes being ''shared around'', she said.

The championships were judged by Richard Crowe, from Rakaia, with Nick Gilbert (Ashburton) as associate judge.
