The Shearing Sports New Zealand team has won the final match to draw the eight-match series in its 2013 Elders Primary Wool UK Tour, albeit with a little help from a friend.

A broken wrist saw Rakaia shearer Tony Coster stand aside and veteran shearer David Fagan, of Te Kuiti, step up for the deciding and final match of the series at the Corwen Shears, in Wales.

Team-mate Golden Shears and New Zealand Open champion shearer Rowland Smith was best on quality but Fagan posted the best times, beating the Welsh team of Gareth Daniel and Richard Jones by 1.7 points.

Fagan also won the Corwen Shears open.

The team began its tour at the end of June with a loss to Scotland at Lochearnhead Shears but quickly bounced back with two wins over England and a win over Ulster at the Rickamore Shears, in Ireland, on July 13.

However, it lost the first three of the four Welsh tests - the first time in a decade-long history of annual New Zealand tours in the northern hemisphere.

Coster and Smith were beaten by the Welsh team of Gareth Daniel and Richard Jones at both the Cothi Shears and the Lampeter Shears, reversing the result suffered by the Welsh team, consisting of Jones and Gareth Evans, in New Zealand last summer.

In another Kiwi triumph at Corwen, Fagan's son, first-season open-class shearer Jack Fagan, teamed with fellow King Country shearer Mark Grainger and Smith's brother, Matthew, to beat teams from Wales, Ireland and France in an international relay.
