A $10 million apartment block in central Dunedin is back on track for completion by April next year, with only a ''handful'' of the 25 apartments as yet unsold.

Co-developer Neil Lyons said all 10 of the two-bedroom, one-car park, apartments had sold, for more than $500,000 apiece, while most of the already-furnished, one-bedroom apartments had sold, for around $330,000 apiece, leaving just ''a handful'' still to sell.

''It's a good central site, everyone likes the fact it's direct access down to George St,'' Mr Lyons said.

While there was a spread of owner-occupiers, out-of-town owners and investors, most of the purchases had been made by people from around Otago, he said.

There were no huge technical hurdles in the construction, but Mr Lyons said getting the building out of the ground had its challenges.

Several neighbours were against the four-storey development, citing its scale and height.

Mr Lyons said extra geotechnical studies and retaining walls were required, which had slowed the project. Its projected finished cost had risen from $8 million to $10 million.

The first half of the building was 80% complete, and the second half was now out of the foundations.

Both will eventually be linked by an open internal courtyard.
