Petrol price rising as refining cost climbs

Petrol prices have risen 11c per litre in less than a fortnight, in line with the rising cost of refining crude over the same period, according to the Automobile Association.

Main centre prices were now $1.879 per litre of 91 octane, $1.969 for 95 octane and $1.219 for diesel.

AA PetrolWatch spokesman Mark Stockdale said he expected prices would remain at the present levels in the short term.

Refined commodity prices had risen more than 12% during the past fortnight, with a barrel of petrol now costing more than $US60 ($NZ82), which was 20% higher than the price of a barrel of oil, Mr Stockdale said yesterday.

After its longest rally in four years, West Texas Intermediate crude was down 3% yesterday at $US47.09 ($NZ64.3) a barrel.

Mr Stockdale said global commodity prices had been rising because of speculation there might be cuts in oil production and a reduction in refined fuel production because of scheduled refinery maintenance around the world.

Even if the global price of crude hit $US1, New Zealanders would still be paying $1.25-$1.30 per litre, given the cost of duel distribution and government taxes, he said.
