Achieving gender balance in law firm partnership was a case of allowing everyone the opportunity to reach their potential, according to the head of the Dunedin firm with the country's highest percentage of female partners.

Anderson Lloyd chairman Stephen Christensen said 45%, or 14, of the firm's 31 partners were women, not 35%, as reported in a survey by New Zealand legal newsletter LawFuel, which ranked the firm top in terms of percentage of female partners.

The survey found just 17% of partners in New Zealand law firms were women, despite women comprising 40% of law graduates.

In the United Kingdom, the figure was 14%.

Mr Christensen said Anderson Lloyd did not have a deliberate strategy of appointing female partners The firm's level of female representation had been achieved by having a workplace culture where all staff could build their careers.

One of the firm's 14 female partners, Sarah Simmers, said gender had never been an issue for her with colleagues or clients.

"I have never felt like it has been an issue or factor for me," she said.

Mrs Simmers, who specialises in corporate and commercial law, became a partner two years ago, six years after joining the law firm upon completing study at the University of Otago.

She has just returned to work from maternity leave.

Mr Christensen said the firm's approach to employment was recognised in 2007 with an award from the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust, which praised its commitment to fostering a good work-life balance.

Anderson Lloyd has offices in Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch and employs 150 staff.

Invercargill law firm Arthur Watson Savage, of whose partners 33% are women, came second in the survey.
