Power has been restored to 430 customers in the Dunedin suburb of Tainui after it was cut this morning when a line came down.

The outage happened at 9.10am after the line fell on Cavell St near the intersection with Magdala St.

A Delta spokesman said power was also out for an extra 450 customers for three minutes at 9.50am as workers carried out switching to isolate the area and safely carry out repairs.

Despite the line leaving scorch marks on the ground, the spokesman said it presented "no danger to the public''.

"Standard safety protection operated immediately ensuring that the downed line was de-energised and electrically safe.''

Delta crews had repaired the overhead line and power had been restored to all customers by noon, he said.

Tahuna Rd resident Rob Donaldson said it was a chilly morning as his heat pump wasn't working.

So a live wire falls and scorches the ground, and Delta says it caused "no danger to the public".

Why does the ODT swallow such obvious nonsense without question?
