A retired Middlemarch man has transformed scrap into a work of art.
When unwanted items, such as sliding doors, window frames and plastic drums pile up on a property, most people plan a trip to the tip.
But Keith Hobden (77), of Aberafon St, saw an opportunity to create something eye-catching.
He bought some plywood and got to work in his garage.
The intention of the keen gardener was to build a planter box but the project morphed to building a car for display at the front of his property.
Inside the 2m-long and 2m-high car sit a driver and passenger - fibreglass mannequins dressed in fine clothing, acquired from a second-hand shop in Dunedin.
The inclusion of the ''old couple'' had ''set off'' the project.
''I'm quite pleased with it.''
Some people commented on similarity of the car to the one owned by the Flintstone family in the cartoon series.
He never intended it to look like the cartoon car but he could see the similarities in the bottom half, with its drums for wheels and logs for side panels, but the top half was different.
A range of ''colourful'' flowers had been planted in the back of the car.
People often stopped to take photos of the car.
