Last week at the games convention in Leipzig, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced their plans for the forthcoming months. Along with improved PS3 and PSP consoles, Sony announced plenty of new games, hardware and services to keep their fans happy. Simon Kemp takes a look at some of the highlights.

Eyepet

It won't make a mess on the floor or claw at the curtains.

EyePet is the ultimate pet for modern living.

Forget the hamsters and guinea pigs and get the perfect first pet for kids and adults alike.

Developed by SCEE, EyePet is the responsive virtual pet who reacts to your every move and brings entertainment and fun for the whole family; plus it's pretty cute as well.

A loveable, simian-like pet, EyePet lives in an on-screen picture of your sitting room as captured second by second on Playstation Eye, the next-generation camera for PS3.

Working in Augmented Reality, EyePet is fully aware of people in the room and will interact with you and your environment.

EyePet will be available in late 2009, so prepare to bring a furry ball of mischief into your home and a new friend into your life.

PlayTV

PlayTV is a digital TV tuner for the PS3 that lets you watch, pause and record live TV from non-subscription channels even while you're watching something else or playing a game.

You can also stream your TV content to your PSP at any wi-fi hotspot in the world.

You can set up recordings via your PSP when you're out.

PlayTV will be available in the PAL territories from September 19 onwards.

VidZone

VidZone will deliver a free streaming music video service to PS3.

The trial service is scheduled for launch in early 2009 for Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

VidZones service allows PS3 owners to watch the best new music videos for free on their PS3 or streamed to their PSP via Remote Play.

From hip-hop to punk and heavy metal to classics, music lovers can build their own playlists and personalise their VidZone experience to be whatever they choose.

All these features and more will be included in the PS3 service, including the option to download songs, music videos and ringtones to a mobile phone for a small charge.

Sony will also be launching a comprehensive film, TV and music download service at a later date.

Massive Multiplayer Online Gaming

Sony are also bringing massive multiplayer online gaming to the PS3 with DC Universe, The Agency and FreeRealms

DC Universe Online (PS3 and PC)

Explore one of the greatest fictional universes in history: the world of DC comics.

Create your own hero or villain and run loose across famous DC locations such as Gotham City or Metropolis, alongside legendary characters of good and evil including Superman, Batman, Huntress, Joker, Wonder Woman and Green Arrow in scenarios written by DC writers and in an art style overseen by renowned DC artist Jim Lee.

The Agency (PS3)

Get your target in your sights with this dark, gritty, online action PS3 shooter, a persistent world of spies, mercenaries and double dealing for aspiring agents everywhere.

As you rise through the ranks as a spy through the various missions and rich story mode, you can build your own spy faction, recruiting new members to your cause.

FreeRealms (PS3 and PC)

An all-new social networking service and massively multiplayer online role-playing game in one, FreeRealms gives players freedom across a world where exploration and spell casting is as much a part of life as decorating your house or growing a vegetable garden.

You chose how you live your life in FreeRealms from day to day being a wizard one day and playing with your virtual pets the next.

Upcoming Games

Along with Sony's own inFamous, Killzone2, LittleBigPlanet, Heavy Rain, Resistance 2, SOCOM: Confrontation, Buzz!: Quiz TV, Siren Blood Curse and Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty (BD), MotorStorm Pacific Rift, upcoming third party titles include Mirror's Edge, EA SPORTS FIFA 09 , and downloadable versions of Burnout Paradise and GTI Club+.

All in all it was a pretty impressive showing from Sony and the future is looking rosy for PS3 and PSP owners.
