The life of Australia's greatest opera singer, Dame Joan Sutherland, will be celebrated with a state memorial at the Sydney Opera House next month.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in an announcement the memorial would be a chance for Australians to pay their respects to the much loved diva.

"It is fitting that we honour such an extraordinary Australian who brought so much joy to her admirers," Ms Gillard said.

"Dame Joan has a special place in the heart of Australians."

Dame Joan died at her home in Switzerland last week aged 83.

A favourite with her peers, Dame Joan was renown for never losing touch with her audience and fans.

The memorial will be held at the Sydney Opera House at 10.30am (12.30pm NZT) on Tuesday, November 9.

Dame Joan's son Adam Bonynge is expected to attend.
