On the floor: Seeds heading south

The Black Seeds
New Zealand reggae band The Black Seeds have recently returned from a world tour.

The band begins a brief South Island tour in Dunedin on September 9 and promises a diverse show.

Barnaby Weir is looking forward to seeing the South Island again.

"We're doing a summer tour of the North Island so thought we'd come south. It's been a while since we've given the South Island some attention, and it's a good chance to get in a few gigs."

Weir says their trip around America and Europe was a blast.

"We played the States, Germany, Portugal; it was our largest world tour. Some gigs were support slots and some we headlined. It was a hard-core tour by anyone's standards. We played 26 gigs in 32 days with three days travel ...

"It was pretty intense, but totally worthwhile. The US crowd seemed to 'get' us straight away; it was awesome."

The band is compiling a new album of remixes, to be called Specials, in which people have remixed Black Seeds songs from a link on the band's website.

People can download and remix their choice of two song stems each with a drum and vocal track.

"I've had a listen; the odd one sounds terrible. It's always risky giving amateurs a go along with others.

"It's been a cool experiment, and we'll actually compile the songs soon. Then we'll vote on them as a band."

As for the spring tour, Weir says audiences should expect some new material.

"People ... won't know six of the tunes, which we're road-testing to possibly go toward a new album."

"We're playing as the full eight-piece band. Should be fun, the usual good vibe; we'll be fresh lot of energy ... It should be a classic Black Seeds gig."

He recommends people turn up early to hear support band The Nudge.

"[It's] Ryan Prebble's new band ... playing some very funky rhythms ... I hope people will be excited to see a good new band."
