The soulful songs of Hollie Smith will be heard at the Mayfair Theatre later this month.

The award-winning soul and jazz musician, who released her third solo album Water or Gold last year, performs in Dunedin on February 23 on a three-date South Island tour.

Smith said the show’s line-up would consist of her and bassist-guitarist Marika Hodgson, as well as some ‘‘programmed stuff’’ to provide ‘‘a little bit more energy’’.

While she had played in Christchurch and cities in the North Island last year, Smith and her band had not made it to Dunedin or further south due to timing and venue difficulties.

She said the response to the album had been ‘‘really good’’, given it had been six years since she released her previous record Humour and the Misfortune of Others.

Since then, Smith had also collaborated with Electric Wire Hustle’s Mara TK on the EP Band of Brothers Vol. 1 in 2011 and had also recorded an album and toured with Anika Moa and Boh Runga under the moniker Anika Boh Hollie.

Smith said she had ‘‘a couple of ideas’’ about collaborations in the works and she would love to do a second ‘‘Band of Brothers’’ album.

After shows in Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill, Smith will do eight shows around Australia.

‘‘[It] should be quite fun.’’
