Little Bushman back down south

Little Bushman's frontman Warren Maxwell remembers the band's last gig in Dunedin well.

"The last time we played Dunedin would have been May 2008. We actually started our tour there playing at 12 Below. From memory, it was a very intimate but loud, psychedelic gig."

The band returns to Dunedin next week following a gig at Womad, where Maxwell is looking forward to catching a few acts.

"I've played WOMAD a couple of times with both Trinity Roots and Fat Freddy's. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the Bedouin Jerry Can Band and U Shrinivas, the Indian classical mandolin player. Amazing."

He says the band is preparing for a bit of hibernation during winter after spending some of the summer song writing, while Maxwell has been pushing his craft into new areas.

"Little Bushman has been working on writing some new material for the next album. We have had a pretty busy summer so I think we'll go into hibernation mode as winter kicks in. I worked on my first film score late last year called The Strength of Water, to be released August '09 in New Zealand."

Following Little Bushman's New Zealand tour, Maxwell says the next step is a jaunt across the ditch.

"We went to Aussie in October last year and dipped our toes into the Aussie hippie bogan community over there. [It] was great.

"We actually supported Blue King Brown - [an] Australian roots reggae funk band - so we got to play in front of decent-sized crowds straight off.

"I think at first they were a bit apprehensive about this group of really straight-looking dudes playing really loud psychedelic rock but we had them by the finale. Keep 'em guessing I say."
