Robyn McLean - Dunedin City Council Candidate

Kia ora, my name is Robyn McLean. I am a first-time candidate for Dunedin City Council and I want to bring new energy into council. I am currently the manager at the South Dunedin Community Network and I have learnt so much while working in the South Dunedin Community!

It is this exposure to grass roots community development in Dunedin that has moved me to run for council.

I believe the Council needs fresh people who can get back to having respectful debates and working more collaboratively.

I stand for:

  • Connected communities across our city
  • Communication and support for those impacted by project work (ie roadworks)
  • The South Dunedin Library and Community Centre
  • A collaborative approach to climate change and sea level rise responses
  • Genuine connection and communication with the community
  • Always treating everyone with respect
  • Better representation in the council chambers

Part of my job has been working with DCC staff through various projects including St Kilda/Saint Clair Coastal Plan, South Dunedin Future Programme, Playground Upgrades, Properties and of course the Community and Events teams. While I have this platform, I would like to share that in my experience, all of the DCC staff I have dealt with are experts in their area, totally professional, and trying their best for our city. The thing that disappoints me the most is the constant pressure these staff are under because of the way they are treated by the public  of Dunedin.

I am supportive of our council being held accountable to the jobs they need to complete. However, under this level of constant scrutiny via social media and other channels, how can anyone be creative and do their best work or enjoy what they do?

I will work as a councillor, with respect, sensibility and a growth mindset. I will read all information provided to me, learn from science, and listen to our communities to make strong decisions in the best interest of our city’s future.

I am bringing into the council chambers all of the skills I have from my 10+ year corporate career, running a family business, working in community development and being a Mum!

I passionately want to do this job – to continue the great growth and progress Ōtepoti is currently making. My key values are Community, Equity and Environment. I will approach everything I do as a councillor, with these three lenses.

I have had heaps of people show their support and excitement, relieved to hear that someone under 40, with my positive attitude is wanting to get into council, and behave in a professional manner at all times to get the job done.

Only 41% of voters voted in the last local election - a minority of Dunedinites are currently making the decision around who is in our Council. A Council that should represent our entire city.

Please vote.
