Carlos Biggemann is no stranger to readers of the ODT, having been featured many times across his illustrious photography career. A Dunedin local, Mr Biggemann has also starred on TVNZ’s Down for Love, a dating show that followed participants with Down syndrome as they looked for love.
Cumulus: An Anthology of Skies, his first hardcover book, captures skies and cloud formations from across the region. A collaborative project, the book pairs Mr Biggemann’s photography with poetry by local and international poets, including Kirsty McKinnon, Claire Arthur, Claire Beynon, Jonathan Cweorth, Judy Fisher and more.
With Mother’s Day around the corner, Cumulus is the perfect gift for mums who love art, poetry and the breathtaking landscapes of home. Brimming with perspective and poetic resonance, it's the kind of book you pick up and put down over months or years.
Mr Biggemann told OAR that living on the Otago peninsula was a source of inspiration for the project. “The skies are just mesmerising; they’re quite unique. The drama, the texture, the colours themselves, as well as the shapes they form in the sky.”
Born in Bolivia, Mr Biggemann has lived in Dunedin since 2006. He is a two-time winner of the Stephen Thomas Award at the My Perspective Photography Competition, an international contest for photographers with Down syndrome. Claiming the title in both 2016 and 2022, his second winning shot was taken from Highcliff Road, showing Dunedin hills half-hidden beneath a sea of cloud.
