Gore High School: Scott Rome

Since breaking his first window with a golf ball when he was 3, Scott Rome (18) has seemingly never put the club down.

The Gore High School pupil likes nothing more than ‘‘bashing golf balls'' in his spare time, which may annoy his mother and ‘‘make a mess of the lawn'' but has certainly helped his sporting achievements.

He joined the school's golf team in 2005 and the team won the Southland Overall Championships last year.

That allowed entry to the National Secondary Schools Golf Championship in which they came eighth.

Outside of school, he has represented Southland since 2007 and is a member of the under-19 team and part of the Southland development team.

This year, his four handicap resulted in him being placed third-equal at the Otago under-23 Golf Championships, receiving the best individual net at the Southland Stroke Play Championship and coming runner-up in the Riversdale Senior Club Championships.

Scott's biggest ‘‘golfing challenge'' came about during the Southland Stroke Play Championship this year when he battled to ‘‘keep it all together'' and retain his lead.

His goal is to be selected for the Southland senior men's hockey and the Southland under-21 golf team, both of which he is trialling for soon.

However, Scott also enjoys hitting a different kind of ball with a different instrument.

He not only played for the school's 1st XI hockey team which won the Pakistan Cup for top Eastern Southland senior men's team last year, but was selected to play for the Eastern Southland senior men's teams for the past two years.

Achievements: School prefect; peer support leader; captain of Gore High's golf team; Southland under-19 golf development member; Southland golf development team member; Southland senior men's hockey team member.

Role model: Tiger Woods.

Hopes for the future: While becoming a professional golf player "would be cool", he planned to study mechanical engineering at the University of Canterbury.
