A well-hidden competitive spirit and a devotion to academic achievement, sporting success and being a respected leader means Campbell Garry (18) is always on the run trying to keep up with his commitments.

The John McGlashan College head prefect is a rising star in cross-country running, and highlights of his career so far have been winning the Otago Senior Cross-country for the past three years, being runner-up in the 2007 New Zealand Cross-country and finishing 19th out of 75 runners at the World Schools Crosscountry in the Czech Republic last year.

Campbell was a member of the Athletics New Zealand track and field team last year and competed at the Australia Down Under Games, the Pacific School Games and in numerous national races.

He has won dozens of medals at regional and national level, and in the 2008-09 season he was named Athletics Otago male winter athlete of the year for his continued running success.

Alongside these achievements, Campbell has been a dedicated member of the school's 1st XI hockey team (2005-08) and the Otago under-15 hockey team (2006-07).

His decision to focus on good grades in NCEA and his enthusiasm for setting a good example in school leadership roles has meant he has had to temporarily sacrifice his passion for hockey.

But the sacrifice is his fellow pupils' gain.

As head prefect, head of student council and board of trustees representative, he has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of the school's pupils, including the establishment of the Student Council Cup.

It is awarded weekly to an individual or group for having a positive attitude towards the activities they do.

Achievements: Head prefect; NCEA level 1 and 2 endorsed with excellence; 1st in art (2008), geography and physical education (2007-08); Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award (2008); student council leader; board of trustees representative (2008-09); blues awards hockey (2007), athletics (2007-09), cross-country (2007-09), scholar (200809); 1st XI hockey (2005-08); Otago hockey U15 (2006-07); 1st Otago Senior cross-country (2007-09); 2nd New Zealand Cross-country (2007).

Role model: ‘‘I like people who are hard workers and pick themselves up when they are down.''

Hopes for the future: To pursue options in geography at the University of Otago, and later join the police force.
