Lack of recent test play proved costly for Argentina

The inclusion of Argentina in the Four Nations next year will boost its chances at future World Cups.

The 13-9 loss to England at Otago Stadium on Saturday night showed the team lacked game time together.

In the past four years, Argentina has only played 18 tests, and it has only had one international in the past 11 months.

No 8 Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, who took over the captaincy when first five-eighth Felipe Contepomi was injured, agreed that regular games against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand would make a difference.

"It will help our performances at World Cups because we will have games against the best three teams in the world," he said. "We are very happy with that."

But his immediate focus is on the Pumas' remaining pool games, starting with Romania in Invercargill on Saturday.

"The important thing for us to think about is our next three games," he said.

"I thought we had a good chance to win it but now that it is over we just have to think of Romania."

He is not tempted to divert his attention to the critical Scotland game that will likely decide which team joins England in the quarterfinals from Pool B.

"We saw today that there is no easy game in the World Cup. We have to think about Romania first," he said.

Coach Santiago Phelan lamented Argentina's failure to score more points against England when it had the chance.

"We wanted a strong defence and that happened but we didn't get the score we wanted," Phelan said.

"We spoke before the game about taking the initiative and being disciplined and in the first half we achieved that and managed to get England to give away penalties. But in the second half we were a bit tired.

"We spoke about having a strong defence and our team was physical without the ball. We were playing against England, which is also a strong physical team."

Argentina could have won the game if it had kicked its goals. Captain Felipe Contepomi kicked one goal from two attempts and fullback Martin Rodriguez two from seven.

Contepomi, who left the field with an injury after 26 minutes, was pleased by the performance of the Argentina team.

"We have played only one test in 11 months and knew it was going to be hard," he said. "We just have to grow from here. But the loss could cost us because it is always easier if you win your first game in the World Cup."

Veteran hooker Mario Ledesma felt the Pumas lost because they failed to grab their try-scoring chances in the last minutes of the first half and in the first two minutes of the second spell when England had a player in the sin bin.

"If we'd scored that try we could have won," he said. "We started making mistakes and they kept coming and coming. I don't know if they deserved to win, but they won."

The other casualty in the Argentina camp was centre Gonzalo Tiesi who left the field after 36 minutes with a strained medial ligament in his knee.
