An Otago whisky has been described as ''one of the most delicate and sophisticated and complex 25-year-olds imaginable'' by 2015 Whisky Bible author Jim Murray.

The 1988 whisky by Oamaru-based New Zealand Whisky Collection scored 96.5 points, the highest score for a southern hemisphere whisky.

Considered the world's leading whisky guide, the bible features 4500 world-leading whiskies.

Mr Murray described the Otago-crafted whisky as a ''superstar''.

''These whiskies are in my view the elite: the finest you can currently find on the whisky shelves of the world. Rare and precious, they are liquid gold.''

He first tasted the whisky on a visit to Dunedin when it was just six years old.

''Who then would have thought that some two decades on I would be tasting this as one of the most delicate and sophisticated and complex 25-year-olds imaginable?''

He described it as one of the most enjoyable whiskies of the year.

''Deft peat forms the most delicate shell imaginable over no less fragile citrus. Soft salt, still a little grist after all these years, background vanilla: almost something akin to a moist lemon drizzle cupcake.''
