Christchurch's "burst! of water" Festival of Flowers started yesterday, with a programme of floral installations and educational events.
Festival organisers chose the water theme to raise awareness of this issue.
Until Sunday February 20, the theme will be embodied in the 23m floral carpet and in flower arrangements in Christchurch Cathedral.
The carpet, designed by Dawn Laughlin, who also designed the 2010 carpet, is entitled "Where Streams of Living Water Flow".
A programme of live music in the cathedral will create a rich, soundscape for visitors to enjoy.
