Simon Wall and Catherine Wall (nee Prattley) were married on February 6 at Mt Iron, Wanaka. The reception was held at the Lookout Lodge, Maungawera Valley, Wanaka. They share the highlights of their big day.

Cath and Simon had been living in the United Arab Emirates, near Dubai, and were on holiday in Canada when Simon proposed.

All the planning for the wedding was done via email, with help from family and friends.

The celebrant was Rev Catherine Little, who christened Simon as a baby nearly 30 years ago.

Catherine's cousin baked the cake and the photographer used to babysit Simon as a child.

The meeting: The couple met on the dance floor at the Bog Irish bar in Christchurch.

The proposal: Simon popped the question on Christmas eve, 2008, while hanging 400m above the valley floor in the Peak to Peak Gondola at Whistler Mountain in Canada, The makeshift venue was chosen after bad weather cancelled the original plan.

It was a complete surprise for Cath (and Simon's cousin, who was skiing with us that day).

Simon had selected the ring before the trip to Canada and travelled with it sewn into his jacket.

The big day: Lots of family and friends, some from as far away as Canada, the UAE and the UK.

The ceremony was held on Mt Iron with amazing weather, clear skies and more than 30degC.

They then went by helicopter for photos at the top of Mt Roy before joining everyone back at The Lookout Lodge in Maungawera Valley for the reception.

The menu was specially chosen for some of the wild foods of the South and served with Quartz Reef pinot noir and topped off with some great speeches, including a video telegram from friends in Canada.

The dress: Cath's dress was made from raw silk purchased in the Dubai material souk and made by a dressmaker in Al Ain, UAE.

It included a koru pattern on the front, made of beads.

Simon and his groomsmen had their suits made in Dubai with Central Otago blue and gold colours themed to match the bridesmaids' dresses.

The cake: The cake was a stack of sticky date mini puddings using Khalas dates grown in the UAE, covered in a butterscotch sauce made by Cath's cousin.

The honeymoon: The honeymoon was spent skiing in Grindelwald, Switzerland, for five days in amazing scenery and fantastic snow.

It was topped off by a week in Nepal trekking and four weeks on a truck tour through Africa.
