Mackenzie district elects first female mayor

Former Mackenzie District Council receptionist Claire Barlow has become Mackenzie's first female mayor.

With 795 votes, Mrs Barlow narrowly beat Graeme Page (765), followed by David Pullen (354). Both men were sitting councillors.

Former mayor John O'Neill decided not to seek re-election.

In Timaru, Janie Annear has been re-elected for a third term, while Waimate Mayor John Coles was unopposed.
