Police in Victoria have made a breakthrough in one of state's most bizarre cold cases, arresting a man over the murder of a male prostitute and self-proclaimed vampire nearly 10 years ago.
The 40-year-old man was arrested in Queensland today in connection with the 2003 death of Shane Chartres-Abbott, a police spokeswoman said.
Chartres-Abbott, 28, was gunned down by two men in front of his girlfriend and father outside his home at Reservoir, in Melbourne's north, on June 4, 2003.
At the time of his death he was on trial for the rape of a female client, who told police Chartres-Abbott believed he was a vampire who needed to drink blood to survive.
But his shooting murder led to a police corruption probe as allegations that suspects had been tipped off by police began to emerge.
Detectives will seek an extradition order on Tuesday afternoon to send the arrested suspect, from the Gold Coast suburb of Benowa, to Victoria.
He will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon to be charged with one count of murder.
Police say the homicide investigation had been complicated by searching around the world for Mark Adrian Perry, who was named as a suspect in 2009.
A $1 million reward was posted that same year.
Police say further arrests are likely.
