Booze a factor in Melbourne drownings

Two men drowned after they got into trouble while swimming in a Melbourne lake after drinking.

The men - one aged 19 and the other in his 30s - quickly got into trouble in the lake on Redleap Reserve at Mill Park. Another man ran for help.

"Unfortunately because of the effects of alcohol, two of them have got into trouble while swimming across the lake," Senior Sergeant Mark Smith said at the scene.

The bodies of both men have been recovered.

A neighbour, Nathan, tried to save the men, after hearing screaming from the park across the road from his home.

"(I) could see their friends frantically running around in the water, screaming and crying," he told Seven.

"I ran over to him, just make sure, and the police arrived and I sprinted home, grabbed a surfboard, something to float on and the police and I conducted a search.

Nathan said visibility was poor and the water was extremely deep, with a layer of floating mould and debris.
