Dozens of people have attended a candlelight vigil for a young girl who died after being hit by an elderly driver in the car park of a Sunshine Coast shopping centre.
Six-year-old Indie Armstrong, her sister, 8, their mother, and grandmother were on a pedestrian crossing at the Nambour Mill Village complex when an 86-year-old woman reversed towards them at speed on Sunday.
Indie died in hospital, and her sister was treated for leg injuries. Their grandmother, 57, was also injured. The girls' mother was there and saw the tragedy unfold but wasn't hurt, police said.
Witness Sandy Singh said it appeared the elderly driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake and lost control of her car.
"The car went like a bullet through the people on the pedestrian crossing," he told The Courier-Mail.
"There was a big bang when the car hit the pole and people were just screaming. Everyone just went crazy."
Local families rugged up against the cold on Sunday night to attend a candlelight vigil near the scene.
"I just want the family to know we're here for them. No one can take away their pain, but the community is here for them," one of the organisers Carey Holden told the paper.
Caitlin Fraser has set up a gofundme page, which has already raised more than $5000 for funeral and medical bills.
She said the Armstrong family was reeling at the loss of Indie, while the girls' grandmother is said to have suffered critical injuries that required surgery.
"They are small business owners on the Sunshine Coast and really just need some time to grieve and get through this extremely hard and heartbreaking time ahead of them," she wrote on the page.
Police initially said the girls' mother was hurt, but now say it was their grandmother.
