YouTube star Dan TDM takes gaming on tour

When Dan TDM was in school YouTube and Minecraft didn't exist, but since he graduated he's created an online career with his quirky gaming videos that draw up to 10 million views a day.

Now his 15 million online subscribers have the opportunity to see him in the flesh on his world tour that starts with four sold-out shows at the Sydney Opera House.

"It's kind of like pantomime, but not as cheesy. It's that mixed with gaming," Dan TDM told AAP before his Sydney shows.

The hype surrounding the 25-year-old from England can be difficult to understand if you're not a kid.

He pumps out two gaming videos a day with clever commentary guiding you through his Minecraft world, taking you on adventures with characters like Dr Trayaurus, Grim the skeleton dog and Craig The Mailman.

His video channels have earned him a Guinness World Record, but Dan TDM said being a gamer was not his first career choice.

"I studied music production, so that would be the career that I would have originally tried to pursue, and then this almost happened by accident," he said.

"I've loved making videos since I was young. I used to make strange, funny videos with my brother and step-brother and I had a love for cartoons as well."

Then YouTube and Minecraft came along.

"I learnt Minecraft through YouTube and then when I discovered you could create your own world, characters and make these awesome cartoons in Minecraft, that's when I really fell in love with the two mixed together," he said.

And he's got the tattoos to prove it - an entire sleeve made up of colourful Minecraft images and the YouTube logo.

He'll be back Down Under in the September school holidays, stopping in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
