University reveals site of ICT school

The University of Otago has plans to open its information and communications technology graduate school in the Exchange, in Dunedin.

The planned home for the school will be John Wickliffe House, in Princes St, close to the warehouse district and ICT businesses in the area.

The Government last year announced plans for a South Island ICT graduate school with students at a Christchurch campus and a Dunedin satellite campus.

The concept was being led by the University of Canterbury, with support from the University of Otago, Lincoln University, the Ara Institute of Canterbury and Otago Polytechnic.

It emerged last month delays meant the Dunedin campus would not open until later this year.

The matter of the school's home came up in a submission yesterday to the Dunedin City Council second generation district plan hearings (2GP). The submission from the university noted it was required to get resource consent for the activity.

Council resource consent manager Alan Worthington said the consent had been non-notified, and was approved last year. The consent was for about 300sq m of office space, with teaching space for 20 or more people, and generally no more than 30 people on site at any one time.
