‘Oops’ reminder first

The Dunedin City Council are taking an initial education-first approach to parking changes.

Council corporate and regulatory services general manager Paul Henderson said no infringement notices had been issued following the introduction of paid Sunday parking in some areas of the CBD this weekend.

"Our parking officers and contractors are taking a public education approach initially, to explain the change to motorists who might still be unfamiliar with the new charges, so we haven’t issued any infringement notices yet.

"This will involve issuing ‘oops, you haven’t paid for your parking’ flyers as reminders when motorists are found to have not paid or stayed too long in a paid park on Sundays," Mr Henderson said.

The council was enforcing time restrictions and other rules in George St as normal.

"It’s too soon to comment on the impact the new charges are having on parking behaviour, but officers haven’t reported any incidents of abusive behaviour arising from the change."
