Dunedin will trial 10 of the bins in the warehouse precinct and at the city’s new bus hub in Great King St as part of the nationwide "Let’s Put Litter in its Place" campaign.
Each smart bin has a sensor which sends out an alert to contractors when it is almost full meaning they are emptied when required rather than according to a schedule.
In other areas where the bins were being trialled there had been a reduction in contamination levels, Mrs Mayes says.
Dunedin’s litter record was better than average, but there was always room for improvement, Mr Cull said.
"It’s great to see smart technology being used to reduce litter and it’s very fitting with our GigCity title. The warehouse precinct has been transformed in recent years and this will only enhance the area."
The smart bins will also be installed in the Clutha and Queenstown Lakes districts.
