Most of State Highway 1 from the Dunedin Botanic Garden to Fairfield is set to have an asphalt seal as part of a three-year workload on the roads in the South.

The Oamaru main street will also be asphalted.

Minister of Transport Chris Bishop said in a statement that the NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi’s annual state highway renewal programme was already under way, continuing delivery of the largest-ever investment in road rebuilding and resealing.

"The overall volume of more than 2100 lane kilometres of newly rebuilt or resealed roads will be similar to last summer. A significant portion - almost 300 lane kilometres - of this is dedicated to delivering new roads, replacing end-of-life seals and pavements with brand new materials that will last."

Regions with significant programmes of new road building include Taranaki, West Coast, the coastal Otago area that includes Dunedin and Oamaru, and Southland. All of these regions will receive more than 20 lane kilometres of new roads.

In Dunedin, the asphalting of State Highway 1 has already begun and will continue throughout the summer.

Work to be undertaken this summer includes SH1 Crawford St (from Gordon St to Queens Gardens, currently under way), followed by SH1 Cumberland St (Gordon St to the Andersons Bay intersection), and on the Southern Motorway (Green Island southbound).

The Thames Highway in Oamaru will be asphalted north of Redcastle Rd this summer, and pavement rehabilitation work is under way at the intersection of SH1 and TY Duncan Rd.

Most of the retail part of Gordon Rd in Mosgiel will also be resealed in the 2026/27 and 2027/28 maintenance seasons.

NZTA advised yesterday road users should plan ahead for a daytime closure of SH1 between East Taieri and Kinmont Park, near Mosgiel, next Tuesday.

The section of SH1/Main South Rd, between Riccarton Rd East and Quarry Rd, is due to be closed from 9am-3.30pm next Tuesday for repairs and road resurfacing.

A detour will be in place.
