A $10,000 refurbishment of the Otago University Squash Club courts is under way with funding for the project being provided by the Otago University Students Association.

OUSA president Logan Edgar said improvements being made to the squash courts would lengthen the life of the champion club's playing facilities.

OUSA administers playing facilities for the university squash club, which has three courts on Union St West, behind the School of Physical Education building.

The refurbishment would provide squash players from all around Otago the benefit of having a better quality playing surface, Mr Edgar said.

The funds to repair and refurbish the squash courts came from OUSA's asset management budget and are separate from a service levy agreement with the University of Otago - a new funding model which effectively contracts OUSA to provide services and facilities to students.

The OUSA-affiliated university squash club had a strong membership base and a playing roster across many skill levels, Mr Edgar said.

The Otago University Squash Club has won several sporting awards during its history, including best OUSA club on campus and the New Zealand Squash Club of the year.

"It's about maintaining a good facility for the long term, that will help keep both social and competitive members coming back to our courts ... we want to make sure we've got a facility they can continue to boast about," Mr Edgar said.

A refurbishment of the squash facility's court two is scheduled to be completed before the start of a social competition which begins as part of Orientation Week, next month.
