$10,000 worth of whisky recovered

Police have recovered some of the rare Dunedin whisky stolen from the Dunedin Railway Station last month.

Detective Constable Hayden Smale said a tip-off from a member of the public led police to recover several items, including 20-litre plastic containers of aged whisky, worth an estimated $10,000.

"We are following some strong leads," he said confirming those investigations had led police to several people in custody at the Otago Corrections Facility.

"We can't be sure until we have spoken to those people."

Still outstanding were the 120 bottles of single malt whisky, worth an estimated $17,500.

The thieves left a gold spray-painted tag "Robbing Hoods" in a room at the north end of the station which was being used to hold whisky-tasting events during the cruise-ship season.
