New hydroslides and improved changing rooms will be part of a $16 million revamp at Dunedin’s Moana Pool.

A cafe may also be added to the Littlebourne Rd site, if one is found to be feasible.

Work is expected to begin in August next year, starting with installation of new water slides.

The overall project is expected to be completed in 2025.

A contract to undertake the design work has been awarded to Beca.

Dunedin City Council parks and recreation acting group manager Scott MacLean said the council would be seeking design proposals from hydroslide suppliers.

The cost of replacing the slides has previously been estimated at $4 million, but Mr MacLean said this would be determined during the design phase.

The best location for a cafe could be determined as part of a feasibility study.

“Due to its age, parts of the buildings, facilities and equipment at the 56-year-old Moana Pool are deteriorating and due for replacement," Mr MacLean said.

"The redevelopment will ensure the facility remains the premier destination for swimming sports and aquatic recreation in the region.”

Refurbished and new changing rooms would include family change areas and there would be new gallery seating, window glazing and improvements to the entrance foyer and retail area.

Mr MacLean said other work would include removal of asbestos, improving accessibility and earthquake-strengthening.

“We’ve received informal feedback from pool users and the community over many years about what they would like to be improved," Mr MacLean said.

"In the long term, we’ll end up with a facility that will be able to cope with future demand."

The $16 million cost was included in the council’s 10-year plan for 2018-28.
