The appeal for funds for tsunami relief in the Pacific is to be boosted by $20,000 from the Dunedin City Council.

Mayor Peter Chin made the announcement during yesterday's community development committee meeting.

He also confirmed organisers of next Tuesday's community fundraising concert in Dunedin would be able to use the Town Hall for free, with a $1000 donation from the Community Trust of Otago covering the venue's expenses.

Confirmed performers for the concert include the St Kilda Brass Band, Gladys Hope, the University Sextet and Mr Chin, with other acts to be confirmed.

There was a "significant" Pacific Island community in Dunedin, with members working to support their families and others in need in Samoa and Tonga, and it was important for the council to lead the way, Mr Chin said.

"My personal view is we should be making a commitment, and also as a way to say to our fellow citizens that we as a council are very concerned and want to help," he said.

The council's donation would be by way of an authorised overspend, with advice to be sought on where the money could best be directed, he said.

A suggestion collection boxes be placed in the council's Civic Centre, as well as the city's museums, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and libraries, would also be considered, he said.

Council community adviser Michael Laufiso said the Samoan Congregational Christian Church, at 41 Macandrew Rd, South Dunedin, and its minister, the Rev Posala Tioa, had agreed to be the drop-off point for community donations.

"At this point in time, the priority in terms of need is for clothing and food (non-perishables only)."

Also needed were construction tools, bedding, lanterns, torches, pots, pans, cutlery and toys.

Mr Laufiso said items could be dropped off, preferably in boxes, 8am-5pm, Monday to Saturday.

Those unable to get to the church could contact the Kokiri Training Centre, also in Macandrew Rd, to arrange pick-ups.

Mainfreight International Dunedin branch manager Aaron Bond has confirmed the company will collect clothing donated to a group of Samoan students in Hyde St. The Mainfreight container in Auckland was almost full and would be sent to Samoa soon, he said.

Otago University Students Association affiliated clubs are also organising a fundraising concert, to be held at the Teacher's College auditorium next Thursday.

A day of activities is planned for Saturday at North Ground. The day, organised by the African students group, with assistance from the Sri Lankan and Indian Students Associations, will include a sausage sizzle and games, with people invited to bring donations of food or clothing.
