A motorist who backed out of a driveway on to Dunedin's Kaikorai Valley Rd and swiftly accelerated back in when he noticed a checkpoint 20m down the road was among 23 drivers processed for drink-driving in the first weekend of a major pre-Christmas drink-driving operation in Dunedin.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell, of Dunedin, said the man, a disqualified driver, was one of more than 8000 who were tested between Friday night and Monday morning.

Twenty-three people were charged with being over the legal limit while driving.

The operation, named Operation Expect More Testing, would continue through to Christmas and begin again in the new year.

"We appreciate it is coming up to the festive season and people want to enjoy themselves, but we want people to act responsibly and think of the safety of others and themselves.

"If you are going out and are going to drink alcohol, plan ahead and arrange alternative transport home," he said.
