The event, hosted by Adult and Community Education (Ace) and Otago Polytechnic, was part of the nationwide Festival of Adult Learning 2021, which aims to shine a light on academic paths both challenging and empowering.
While most of the other events around the country were cancelled, the Dunedin ceremony on Thursday night went ahead with 60 attendees, including 30 award recipients.
Awards in three categories — outstanding adult learner, exceptional adult educator and innovative provider — were presented to recipients by Otago Polytechnic chief executive Dr Megan Gibbons and Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins.
Recipients included exceptional adult educators award recipient Shirley McCarthy, who said she was excited and pleased to receive an award this year for her work as a tutor for Skillsec.
The 30 recipients came from various organisations based in Dunedin, including Otago Polytechnic, Volunteering Otago, Harrington Vaughan Hairdressing Academy, English Language Partners and Skillsec.
