The Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head is to close to the public for two months during the winter while the facility is refurbished.

Royal Albatross Centre manager Annie Villiers said a board meeting was held last week about refreshing and updating the space at the centre, and it was decided the best way to do the work was by having limited opening hours.

"We've concluded that the best way to manage this is to open during the winter in the afternoons only, from June 1 to July 31, then only by arrangement for education programmes and pre-arranged group bookings from August 1 to September 30."

The cafe would be closed throughout the refurbishment (June 1 to September 30), and it was hoped to re-open for the new season on October 1, 2012.

Plans and funding for the refurbishment had not yet been finalised, but Ms Villiers said updating signs, looking at "people flow" within the centre, and painting the inside, would be included in the work.

"We've decided to do it in the quiet time of the year for us, so that we're not being disrupted by the flow of visitors, and vice versa."
