Choosing a regional finalist for the Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year competition is getting harder every year, an Otago judge says.

Carters branch manager Maurice Blair, who is one of three people judging Otago and Southland entrants in the annual competition, said they looked for apprentices with an eye for detail, a good health and safety discipline, and a willingness to learn.

A record number of apprentices entered the competition this year, from which 10 regional finalists are selected before the winner is announced in October.

A Dunedin apprentice won the competition last year.

Nationally, 161 apprentices entered, 26 more than last year. In Otago and Southland, there were 16 entries.

One of the Otago and Southland finalists, Ben Jenkins (22), said he enjoyed working outside.

"I love coming to work, especially when it is sunny," Mr Jenkins said.

The competition is a joint initiative by Carters, the Registered Master Builders Federation, the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and the Department of Building and Housing.
