Dunedin played host to the annual King’s Birthday Highland and National Dancing Championships and Solo Piping Competition over the weekend.

The dancing took place at the College of Education auditorium and the piping was held at John McGlashan College.

There were 130 dance competitors and 62 pipers.

Most dancers competed in many categories, carrying out solo routines.

The competitors ranged in age from  6 and under all the way up to adults.

Otago Centre president Shiobhan Smith said there was a high standard shown in all disciplines.

There were more than 30 trophies up for grabs in the dance competitions held over the two days.

Photographer Gerard O’Brien was there.
