Two multi-vehicle crashes left two people injured and the Southern Motorway closed as icy conditions caused chaos around Dunedin this morning.
A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to a crash on the Southern Motorway, near the Green Island exit, involving four vehicles about 7.25am.
One car is believed to have hit the median barrier and flipped on to its roof, trapping an occupant inside.
The spokeswoman said they had since been extracted and a patient was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries. Another person suffered minor injuries in the crash.
The Southern Motorway was closed to southbound traffic from the Riselaw Rd overbridge for more than an hour.
It reopened shortly after 9am.
In the city, a three-vehicle crash in Cosy Dell Rd led authorities to close it entirely due to dangerous icy conditions.
Nobody is believed to have been hurt in the crash.
Police have reminded motorists to take extra care on the roads around the South amid icy conditions.
