Part of a 16-strong field sets off on a choppy Otago Harbour yesterday for the 20km race at the IceBreaker Challenge.

The two-day Dunedin waka ama event was hampered somewhat by gusty conditions that plagued the city over the weekend.

Club president Nigel Wilson said about 170 paddlers from as far away as Wellington lined up for the annual regatta and the conditions were true to the IceBreaker name.

The chilly wind was blowing right up the harbour and on to competitors as they paddled away from the city.

Competitors ranged in age from 9 through to 80.

The wide spread of entrants was a testament to the accessibility of waka ama as a sport for all generations, Mr Wilson said.

A 10km race took place on Saturday and the wind also made for some tough going in yesterday’s 20km race, the course for which consisted of two laps from the University of Otago Rowing Club to St Leonard’s and back.
