A Dunedin man is already leading his team after completing his apprenticeship less than a year ago.

Packit supervision production technician Wesley Lewis has completed his more than four-year apprenticeship and has been named the Plastics Apprentice of the Year.

He said the award was a bit of a shock.

He just showed up to work every day with a good attitude and a willingness to learn.

"I like to bring solutions not problems.

"It’s rewarding for me to figure it out and fix it."

Mr Lewis was now leading a team of three at Packit, which included a senior tradesman with more experience than him and another apprentice.

He said his advice to his staff was to always give things a go.

"A lot of people come into a business and they’re scared of making mistakes and that’s going to hold people back.

"I made a lot of mistakes, but I figured a lot of things out through that as well."

Packit general manager and part owner Jamie Hodgins said he was glad to have young people like Mr Lewis coming into the industry.

"He is calm under pressure and you need to have a calm head and figure out what the problem is and come up with a solution instantaneously."
